ma ma is a paper floral practice rooted in a hundred-year-old tradition from the Belgian coast, called Strandbloemen. During hot summer days, mothers lovingly handcraft paper flower stems for their children to “sell” on the beach in exchange for razor clam shells (couteaux).

ma ma reimagines this playful tradition as an ongoing study of floral form through paper.

Working with only crepe paper, wire, scissors, glue, and the occasional touch of paint, each stem is shaped entirely by hand. The crepe paper is stretched, gathered, and gently rippled to echo the movement and structure of living flowers.

Alongside studio practice, ma ma hosts workshops that introduce participants to the craft of Strandbloemen. Beyond teaching technique, these sessions encourage students to embrace imperfection, remain open to experimentation, and discover a greater sense of freedom and play within their creative process.
